Vesa Kämäräinen, CEO

Vesa Kämäräinen is one of NHG’s founders and the CEO of the company. Previously, he served as Research Director at the Institute of Healthcare, Engineering, Management and Architecture (HEMA) of the Helsinki University of Technology, and is one of the founders of the Institute. He has also worked as Programme Manager of the Health MBA programme at the Helsinki University of Technology.

Vesa has extensive experience in projects related to health care logistics, process productivity, strategy, and business planning. Prior to his career in health care development, Vesa worked in retail with logistics development as his area of expertise. He holds a Master’s degree in economics (Helsinki School of Business) and a Doctor of Science degree in Technology (Helsinki University of Technology, Industrial Engineering and Management). In addition to NHG, Vesa has been involved in founding and developing other growth companies.

Virpi Kronström, Finance Director

Virpi Kronström is one of the founders of NHG and acts as Director, financial and human resources. Previously, she served as a researcher at the Institute of Healthcare, Engineering, Management and Architecture (HEMA) of the Helsinki University of Technology, and is also one of the founders of the Institute. Virpi has extensive experience in service business, and organisation and process development. In addition to health care development, Virpi has held positions related to research and development in service and project businesses. She has received a Master of Science in Engineering (Tampere University of Technology, Industrial Management) degree and is conducting postgraduate studies at Aalto University (Helsinki University of Technology).

Olli Tolkki, Account Director

Olli Tolkki is responsible for NHG’s account management and structural reform projects. His areas of expertise include social and health care service structures, service business development and commercialisation, and process development in the broadest sense of the word. Olli is also an active lecturer in health care training programmes.

Olli holds a Master’s degree in Economic Sciences from the Helsinki School of Economics. Prior to joining NHG, he served, for example, as a researcher at the Institute of Healthcare, Engineering, Management and Architecture (HEMA) of the Helsinki University of Technology, and a researcher and project manager at the Hospital District of Helsinki and Uusimaa (HUS), Medical Imaging.

Vesa Komssi, CEO

Vesa’s background is in international health care management consulting. Before NHG, Vesa worked at the Boston Consulting Group in Stockholm and Helsinki.

At NHG, he has participated in a wide range of projects from home care development to business acquisition consulting. As an example of the former is the Kotitori service integrator model, realised in Tampere, Finland, where Vesa has participated since 2009, seeing to the development of productivity and effectiveness in elderly home care. In business acquisitions, NHG’s expert and consulting services support the buyer, often a venture capitalist, in evaluating the company and its market. In addition to these, Vesa is specialised in analysing the distribution of social and health care costs among population, for example in Oulu, Finland, where a special study was conducted to tap into the most expensive patient groups.

Vesa started at NHG in January 2008 as a project manager, and in 2010, he was appointed the CEO of the new subsidiary, NHG Consulting.

Ville Niukko, Business Director (Kuntamaisema)

Ville Niukko acts as Business Director at Kuntamaisema Oy, a NHG’s subsidiary. His areas of specialty include the development of technical services and central management in municipalities, municipal business intelligence and management systems. Prior to his present appointment in May 2014, Ville served as a project manager at Kuntamaisema Oy for a period of four years. Ville holds a Master’s degree in economics from the Turku School of Economics. Earlier in his career, he worked – among other roles – as a project manager at the City of Turku central government in a project concerning knowledge management, and as a researcher and lecturer at the Turku School of Economics with management and organisation as his fields of interest.

Board

Professor Paul Lillrank, Chairman of the Board, has served as Professor of Quality and Service Management at the Helsinki University of Technology (HUT) since 1994. Between 1996-1998 and 2002-2007, he acted as Head of the Department of Industrial Engineering and Management.

Lillrank received his PhD in 1998 from the University of Helsinki with quality management practices of Japanese industry as his topic. In 1988-92, Paul worked for Boston Consulting Group in Tokyo and Stockholm, and in 1992-96, as Affiliated Professor at the European Institute of Japanese Studies at the Stockholm School of Economics, focusing mainly on the development of the Japanese software industry. Prof. Lillrank has served as Visiting Professor at the University of Tokyo, Program Director at College des Ingenieurs in Paris, and as a teacher in numerous MBA programs. He has published scientific studies on quality management, Japanese economy and management, technology transfer, corporate cultures, the impact of information technology on business, and on service production.

Paul was part of the jury for the Finnish Quality Award in 1995-2000, and has provided consulting and coaching services for, for example, Nokia, Finnair, ABB, Tietoenator and Kesko. His research interests include the management of service production systems, and service quality especially in health care. He is a founding member of the Institute of Healthcare, Engineering, Management and Architecture (HEMA) of the Helsinki University of Technology.
